About Us

WHAT IS A MEMORY CAFE?

Memory Cafes now exist throughout the UK. They are not diagnostic clinics, but are run by trained volunteers and are places where people with a degree of memory loss can go with their carers to socialize and have fun. At a memory cafe people can just be themselves, knowing that no one judges them. They can enjoy a range of stimulating and interesting activities and shared experiences with others, as well as enjoying delicious refreshments.

WHO COMES TO CRANTOCK MEMORY CAFE?

Crantock Memory Cafe is an independent, local and non-denominational organisation. At the present time we have members from Cubert, Newquay, Quintrell Downs, St Newlyn East and obviously Crantock. In truth, we welcome anyone from Crantock and the wider area. Members are primarily coping with some degree of memory loss and always attend with a carer. We have found that with time our members feel relaxed and they have so many memories that just come flooding back – our aim is to provide the stimulus!

WHY IS IT CALLED A MEMORY CAFE?

We aim to make the monthly meetings a social and informal occasion, as in a cafe, whereby our members can relax in a friendly atmosphere over a cup of tea and homemade refreshments and have opportunities to reminisce and chat amongst friends.

WHERE, AND WHEN, IS IT HELD?

The Crantock Memory Cafe meets in Crantock Village Hall on the first and third Mondays of every month from 2pm – 4pm. This is a light, warm and airy building and outside there is ample space for parking cars and we have ready access for anyone with a disability. New members are welcome to just come along. However, if you need further information
feel free to contact Di on 01637 830544, or email us.

WHAT SORT OF THINGS DO YOU DO?

We aim to provide an afternoon of fun, chatter and laughter! We want to allow those having difficulties to share opportunities with others, to reminisce and enjoy themselves by way of a wide range of pastimes – music, song, pictures, word games, creative activities and outings to name but a few. We even provide a relaxing hand massage.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Attendance at the Memory Cafe is free. Members are welcome to give a voluntary donation towards the hire of the hall, general running costs etc. if they wish, but there is no obligation to do so.

WHY SHOULD ANYONE CONSIDER COMING?

For a person with some memory loss, and his/her carer, it is a non-threatening environment where you are meeting others with similar difficulties. We have found that members do have many memories to share and they gain self-confidence in what they can achieve in the mutually caring and supportive company of ‘friends’.

Carers can relax too, knowing that they are in a place of understanding and care, and are able to exchange experiences with other carers and our volunteers.

Finally, if someone comes along and feels that it is not for them, there is no obligation to attend. We would suggest however that they come along to a few sessions as activities do change and the regular companionship of others becomes especially therapeutic!
